Find Data

The Southcentral Alaska Science Catalog utilizes robust search capabilities to help you find the data and projects you are looking for. There are a four different methods to search for data records within the Southcentral Alaska Science Catalog. You may use a single or combination of methods to locate the record you are looking for.

Geographic Search with the Mapping tools

The map that appears at the top of the data page can be used to search for individual datasets based on record type (Project or Data) and location. Use the mouse to navigate and zoom to an area of interest. The geographic location of Individual records are marked with blue (data record) and orange (project record) points. To select an individual record, click on the point. The selected point will turn red on the map and the Data Record in the results panel below the map will be highlighted yellow, and scroll to the top of the list.

Search by Keyword

Records can be searched for by using keywords or text strings. The Enter keyword search tool searches all text associated with each record and returns results sorted by relevance. The Enter keyword search tool utilizes boolean operators to refine searches containing multiple words:

  1. AND is the default search operator when multiple text words are entered in a search. The filter will assume AND in the search. Example: Searching for caribou population will return records that contain both caribou AND population in the record.
  2. A plus (+) can be used to require additional text in the selected record similar to AND. Example: caribou + population will require that both the words caribou and population occur in the record.
  3. When multiple text words are entered between double quotes ("), the search will require that the words between the quotes be searched as a phrase in the order they are entered between the quotes. Example: "caribou population" text string will result in a search for occurrences of "caribou population" in a record. Use of single quotes (') around the search string will not produce similar results as the double quotes (").
  4. A minus (-) can be used to remove (NOT) records with a particular text string. However it can only be used together with other text and cannot be entered alone. Example: caribou - population will return all records where caribou occurs as text but will exclude records where the text population occurs.

Filter by Collection

Records can be searched by selecting predefined Collections for related data records. Collections are logical groupings of similar type/theme data records and are managed by the Catalog Coordinator. Detailed collection descriptions are available by hovering the mouse cursor over the collection name in the search panel.

To view the contents of, or search within a collection, click on the collection name. The number of results in each collection is shown to the right of the collection name, and is updated as additional filters are applied. The collection filter remains active until you either click on the collection again, click the Clear button, or select another collection.

Applying Advanced Filters

Use the Advanced Filters to further refine your search. Each record can be searched by Advanced Filters including: Record type, data type(s), status, date(s), ISO topic(s), Region(s), Agency(s), and Contact(s).

  1. Click on Advanced Filters dropdown to see all Advanced Filters search options. Select one or multiple attributes to filter your search.
  2. Click Apply button at bottom of Advanced Filter window or click the Search button below the Enter keyword search box above.
  3. Add/remove additional filters as needed.
    • To clear a single filter, and leave the other filters active, go to the filter’s drop-down list, click the ‘x’ located to the right of field.
    • To clear all filters and restart the search, click the Clear button located next to the search button.

Data Record Results

Search results will appear in the results panel to the right of the search panel. The total number of results as well as the results visible in the results page and navigation to additional results pages appear in buttons located both above and below the data records. Use the arrow buttons to the left and right of the results button to navigate to additional data records pages if available.

Scroll through the search results to identify the record you are interested in. Each record is initially shown in a condensed format with the Record Title, Agency, Description and Record Type displayed. The record can be expanded by clicking on the Record Title or clicking on the Full Record button. If a small globe icon appears next to the Record Title, you can zoom to the geographic location of the record on the Map by clicking on the Zoom To button. Or, if you would just like to download the available data and reports, simply click the Download button, and select where you would like to save the downloaded zip file.
